About Dr Pretorius
Dr Lourens Pretorius grew up on a farm where his deep love and respect for nature was established. His boarding school years rendered him fiercely independent and he matriculated in 1975 in Ermelo.
In 1981, Dr Pretorius obtained his degree in Dentistry from the University of Pretoria. During his National Service, he obtained an Honours degree with a distinction in Orthodontics. Driven by his passion, he then completed his MChD (Cum Laude) degree specializing in Orthodontics at the University of Pretoria.
Whilst specializing he was appointed as Head of the Orthodontic Department at 1 Military Hospital and it was during this time he was awarded the rank of Commander.
His flourishing orthodontic practice, striving for excellence, commenced in 1990 in Roodepoort.
In order to equip himself with the best management skills, he completed his practical MBA at UNISA in 1991.
Dr Pretorius married Saartjie in 1993. She helped him build a flagship practice that today, 26 years later, is known for the high standards it maintains. They are blessed with a beautiful and exceptionally talented daughter, Amy, who fulfills their lives.
Keeping his keen academic interest alive, he trained post graduate students in orthognatic surgical procedures. He also lectures locally and abroad with keen interest on the subject of lingual orthodontics as well as orthognatic surgery.
Dr Pretorius attends various seminars and congresses annually to keep him updated with the ever changing trends in the orthodontic field. This enables him to provide the most technologically advanced orthodontic care to his patients. Associations that Dr Pretorius holds membership to are: American Association of Orthodontists, South African Society of Orthodontics, World Federation of Orthodontics, South African Dental Association, Health Professions Council of South Africa. His natural curiosity, driven by his love of nature, lead him to the involvement with ostrich farming, parrot breeding and game farming over the past 15 years. He finds his passion for gardening stimulating and derives much pleasure from his unique collection of cycads. Landscaping and gardening are more of his passions and in living out his creativity he has designed many gardens including the gardens at Mosaiëk church in Fairland.
Keeping fit is really important to Dr Pretorius. He thrives on competition and in particular enjoys cycling. He already completed ten Argus Cycle Tours as well as ten 94.7 Cycle Challenges.
Precious moments for him include motorcycle rides in the mountains, skiing in Italy, canoeing in the waves of Plettenberg Bay and horse riding over open planes.
In nature he experiences closeness with his Creator, calms and enriches his spirit. The imprint left by him on his practice is not only to be the best orthodontic practice but also to make that same practice the Kingdom of Jesus in order to enable the orthodontic team to be able to make a lasting difference in people’s lives. Dr Pretorius and his team strive to be available for their patients as their perfect smiles are the team’s passion and they considers the service provided to patients a privilege.
